The shows main character, Tracy Turnblad is the spunky heroine with a larger-than-life personality. She is a not-so average teenager growing in Baltimore during the politically turbulent 1960’s. With the odds stacked against her, Tracy’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, and she doesn’t let her stature and size stop her dream. With her quirky parents, Wilbur and Edna, as well as her friends Penny, Seaweed, and Little Inez by her side, there is nothing she can’t accomplish.
Tracy’s sassy dance moves, quick wit, and endearing personality, earns her a place on the show and she even becomes a fan favorite! However, Tracy quickly learns, that not everyone is welcome on the show. Her fiercest competition is Amber Von Tussle and her overbearing mother Velma, who just happens to be the producer of The Corny Collins show. This sneaky and close-minded duo will do anything to make Amber Miss Teenage Hairspray, no matter what the cost.
Let’s just say neither were happy when Corny Collins, the lovable and progressive host, wanted Tracy on his show. He is determined to help Baltimore move toward integration, even suggesting that the “Big, Blond, and Beautiful” Motormouth Maybelle, host of the African-American version of the show, join Corny – making it truly racially integrated. Tracy and her African-American friends, Seaweed and Little Inez, feature dancers on Motormouth Maybelle’s show, are extremely talented, so joining the show is a a huge threat to Amber’s crown, not to mention, to her relationship with the shows heartthrob Link Larkin.
Tracy’s optimism and unique dance style peaks Link’s interest, quickly making her the object of his affection.
